Hongkong United States and Hong Kong Essay Hongkong: United States and Hong Kong Essay Hong Kong Protests A situation is developing in Hong Kong where students are protesting recently made changes in how they can elect a leader. In 1997 the British returned control of Hong Kong over to mainland China. This hand over was expected to cause problems but actually went relatively smoothly. This return of power allowed China to get a taste of capitalism, and greatly boosted their economy. The peaceful coexistence between these two entities came to an end when a decision was made to lower the amount of political power that Hong Kong holds. This decision sparked large protests which have become known as the â€Å"umbrella revolution†, for the umbrellas used by protesters to block pepper-spray fired from the riot police. Soon after organized civil disobedience began information leaked which indicated these operations were largely funded and supported by the United States, through many had suspected this from the beginning. This is only the latest development on the world stage which is quickly becoming something reminiscent of the cold war. In response to this development the United States government claimed they are only trying to support democracy. This statement contradicts itself, as a democracy does not include outside entities asserting control over power. These moves have only worsened relations between Beijing and Washington, and removed credibility from the protest leaders. I wholeheartedly support an independent Hong Kong, but this needs to be achieved by true grassroots movements, not the United States getting involved in yet another type of proxy war. On August 31, 2014 the tenth session of the standing committee in the twelfth National People's Congress set new limits and procedures for the 2017 chief executive election. This decision states that a 1200 member nominating committee will be formed for the election. This nominating committee will vote on two or three candidates, each of which must receive at least half of the vote. After winning the popular vote the nominee will still have to be accepted in the Central People's Government. This will allow Beijing to ensure that a chief executive is elected which will act in their interests, which are usually not aligned with the interests of Hong Kong. The change in policy by Beijing sparked off a number of protests and boycotts. Civil disobedience protests now known as Occupy Central were organized. On September 13 secondary-school students staged protests outside of the central government offices and announced a week long class boycott to begin on September 26. The tertiary school students announced their own week long class boycott to begin September 22. These students came up with four demands: universal suffrage (right to vote), the resignation of chief executive CY Leung, the withdrawal of the decision by the National People's Congress Standing Committee, the submission of a new electoral reform plan which includes civil nomination of Hong Kong's chief executive. On September 27 the police surrounded the protestors in the center of Civic Square. The police initially allowed protesters to leave if they showed their ID, but the peace soon broke down and the police began to pepper-spray and arrest protesters. By the end of the night 78 people had been arrested. The plan to occupy Hong Kong's Central Government Complex was initially set to begin on October 1st, but protest organizers decided to begin the occupy movement on September 28th to take advantage of the momentum and large numbers of protesters in the area. During the late morning of the 28th police again began to encircle the students. Protest leaders called for reinforcements, and soon the riot police were themselves encircled. Through the use of tear gas the police were about to route the protesters, who took up positions in strongholds located in commercial neighborhoods of Hong Kong. The 1969 Redstockings Abortion Speakout Protest In 1969, the members of radical feminist group Redstockings were furious that legislative hearings about abortion featured male speakers discussing such a crucial womens issue. They, therefore, staged their hearing, the Redstockings abortion speak-out, in New York City on March 21, 1969. The Fight to Make Abortion Legal The abortion speak-out took place during the pre-Roe v. Wade era when abortion was illegal in the United States. Each state had its own laws about reproductive matters. It was rare if not unheard of to hear any woman speak publicly about her experience with illegal abortion. Before the radical feminists fight, the movement to change U.S. abortion laws was more focused on reforming existing laws than repealing them. Legislative hearings on the issue featured medical experts and others who wanted to finesse the exceptions to abortion prohibitions. These experts talked about cases of rape and incest or a threat to the life or health of a mother. Feminists shifted the debate to a discussion of a womans right to choose what to do with her own body. Disruption In February of 1969, Redstockings members disrupted a New York legislative hearing about abortion. The New York Joint Legislature Committee on the Problems of Public Health had called the hearing to consider reforms to the New York law, then 86 years old, on abortion. They roundly condemned the hearing because the experts were a dozen men and a Catholic nun. Of all women to speak, they thought a nun would be the least likely to have contended with the abortion issue, other than from her possible religious bias. The Redstockings members shouted and called for the legislators to hear from women who had had abortions, instead. Eventually, that hearing had to be moved to another room behind closed doors. Who Gets to Speak The members of Redstockings had previously participated in consciousness-raising discussions. They had also drawn attention to womens issues with protests and demonstrations. Several hundred people attended their abortion speak-out in the West Village on March 21, 1969. Some women spoke about what they suffered during illegal â€Å"back-alley abortions.† Other women spoke about being unable to get an abortion and having to carry a baby to term, then have the child taken away when it was adopted. After the Demonstration More abortion speak-outs followed in other U.S. cities, as well as speak-outs on other issues in the subsequent decade. Four years after the 1969 abortion speak-out, the Roe v. Wade decision altered the landscape by repealing most abortion laws then in effect and striking down restrictions on abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy. Susan Brownmiller attended the original 1969 abortion speak-out.  Brownmiller then wrote about the event in an article for the  Village Voice, Everywomans Abortions: The Oppressor  Is Man. Once the children started working, the teacher went around the room checking on each pair, stopping once in a while to help those who need help or asking questions to guide the children. The children with special needs do not stand out. I would never identify them as such had I not been told they had special needs because they blend in so well with the typically-developing students. The second setting was a one-on-one session between a 7-year old boy with cog nitive delay and a reading specialist. She was trying to teach him phonetic sounds. She showed him some letter cards and asked him to sound out the letters. First it was done slowly with the teacher making the sounds while showing the cards and he imitated her. Later on, she kept showing him the cards and expected him to sound the letters by himself. Next came picture cards that he needed to identify and match the initial sound of the word with a letter. She started with only 3 pairs of picture and letters graduating to about 10 pairs at a time. The boy seemed to have a difficult time processing the pairings because it took him a long time to match the cards, but the reading teacher was very patient. My initial reaction to the observation was pure awe. I was so inspired with how these teachers can be so patient and understanding in helping out the students with special needs and they go out of their way preparing special activities for them. I thought they meticulously planned ahead in order to meet their needs and for the teacher of the inclusive class, to address each child’s need. I realized it takes special training to do what they do and a passion and commitment to do so. With the inclusive class, the teacher had to contend with multiple personalities and consider each student’s skill level so she can pair them off well. That meant she had previous knowledge of these children and have assessed them thoroughly. It seemed her pairings worked because I observed all the children productively working together. The partner of the child with ADHD was also very patient in holding his attention, often tapping his shoulder to make him focus on their task. I am not sure if this partner or any of the other typically- developing children were trained to deal with peers with special needs, but this boy seemed to know how to handle the hyperactive tendencies of his partner. The partner of the child with cognitive delay likewise displayed patience with her partner. She was like a miniature teacher going through the activity with him, asking him guiding questions so he can come up with the solution. It was obvious that she already knew the answer, however, she wanted him to figure it out himself. I saw a smile cross her face when he was able to answer the problem correctly. The reading teacher, on the other hand, worked only with one child, but I think it took much effort in guiding him. She poured all her concentrated effort on him without being distracted.
